The Capitals have moved on from another long-time player, trading 36-year-old John Carlson as part of their youth movement. This follows previous departures of veterans like Nicklas Backstrom, T.J. Oshie, and Braden Holtby as the team transitions from the generation that brought them a Stanley Cup in 2018.
Washington is building around a new core of players in their mid-to-late 20s and early 30s, including Logan Thompson, Jakob Chychrun, Matt Roy, Martin Fehervary, Dylan Strome, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Aliaksei Protas, and Tom Wilson, who is expected to succeed Ovechkin as captain. All are signed through at least 2029, giving the team a foundation to remain competitive.
