Former NFL cornerback Alphonso Smith Jr., the 37th overall pick in the 2009 draft, has died by suicide at age 40 in Florida.

Alphonso Smith Jr., a former NFL cornerback who played for the Broncos and Lions, died by suicide at a Florida housing community on Wednesday. Before his passing, Smith had posted a troubling message on Facebook that revealed his struggles. ipl-cricket.in

Smith was drafted by Denver in 2009 and traded to the Lions in 2010. He played through 2012, appearing in 42 regular-season games with 11 starts. A Wake Forest standout, he was a consensus All-American in 2008 and inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
