Premier League: Odegaard winner helps Arsenal sink Chelsea 2-1

London [UK], September 7 (ANI): Arsenal came from behind courtesy of a Martin Odegaard winner, securing a 2-1 win over rivals Chelsea in a high-octane London Derby at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The ‘Super Sunday’ clash saw both London giants at their best in the first major Premier League clash of the new season, with defending champions Arsenal levelling with Manchester City with nine points and Chelsea on fourth with six points. biznow.biz

Morgan Rogers put Arsenal ahead in the second minute and that poked Arsenal. After Riccardo Calafiori’s goal was given offside, the former Chelsea star Kai Havertz struck in the 25th minute from the edge of the box to level the scores.

Arsenal was dominating the proceedings, and Chelsea missed a chance to take the lead as Rogers’ attempt went wide and Pedro Neto hit the woodwork. The scoreline read 1-1 after the first half.

In the 50th minute, Odegaard put Arsenal in front, latching onto a pass from Christos Tzolis.

Chelsea had their moments in the second half, but Arsenal was much more ruthless; Bukayo Saka and Ezri Konsa were denied by veteran goalie Emiliano Martinez. In the 89th minute, Estevao produced a sensational curling effort, which needed some saving from David Raya to keep the lead intact.

Speaking after the match as quoted by Sky Sports, Arsenal boss Arteta said, “I think it is an indication for us of how capable we are to perform at an even higher level than last season.

“And it depends on how we maintain and sustain that desire, that humility, and continue every day to try to find a better version of myself and the team. We still have a lot to grow and a lot to offer, and this is the ambition of the team."

“I think it was an exceptional performance. I think I enjoyed every minute of it from the beginning to the end, and the beginning was tough, but I enjoyed it because the team reacted in a spectacular way."

“The conviction, the determination, the quality of which I intend to have them constantly, it was beautiful. It was a fascinating game, I think, for the spectator as well, and I think we deserved to win the game, which I am really pleased with, obviously," he signed off.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso also said to Sky Sports that his priority is to win games and his side needs to be “tighter, more clinical, more balanced."

“We wanted to compete, win here. We knew we were not that far but it went their way. We could have scored for 2-1 and you never know what happens. The result is the result; I cannot argue against that. But we need to take it, not happy. It hurts. Disappointed for sure. This is our first defeat," he said.

“I want to compete in the best possible way to win. Today we did not want to sit deep from the first minute. We want to be active, protagonists in the pressing. We have done many right things. We need to make it better, learn from them."

“When you play at the top level, we want to be as efficient in all the phases of the game. But this is where we are. It is game three or four for us in a new phase starting with Chelsea. I am pleased with the spirit and attitude of the players. They worked hard," he signed off. (ANI)

Duleep Trophy final, Day 1: Kishan takes East to 385-4 vs South

Skipper Ishan Kishan struck a flowing unbeaten 111, leading East Zone to a commanding 385 for four against a sloppy South Zone on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy final here on Sunday. Kishan (14x4, 1x6) and Kumar Kushagra (63) were batting at stumps, and the fifth wicket pair has so far added 144 runs in just 26.4 overs. The other contributors were teen phenom Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (44, 37b), Abhimanyu Easwaran (72), and Shikhar Mohan (85).

Kishan, who completed 4000 first-class runs, merged aggression and composure to a nicety in his 135-ball knock, and raised 94 runs for the fourth wicket with Mohan. It came at an important juncture too when East were in trouble, the only time in the first innings so far, at 147 for three.

South could have had their rivals in a far deeper predicament but Kishan and Mohan averted the disaster on a pitch that remained true the whole day. Kishan's was a complete innings, sending the ball to all parts of the field through powerful pulls and imperious drives through the covers.

The left-hander reached his fifty in 71 balls and then the next 50 came off 51 balls, completing his 10th first-class hundred. Kishan reached the landmark with a driven four off Shreyas Gopal, who was playing in his 100th first-class match. At the other end, Mohan has a solid presence, showing a lot more maturity than his tender 21 years.

The feature of his innings was the judgment he showed to leave the ball outside off-stump. There was not even one single play and miss in his innings. But his fifty was not all about defence as Mohan carted off-spinner Tripurana Vijay for a six and two fours in one over to showcase his range. Just as he was nearing a well-deserved hundred, Mohan chopped left-arm pacer CV Milind, who replaced an injured Vidwath Kaverappa, on to his stumps.

In fact, it was the East's first innings story in a nutshell, batters getting dismissed before the innings reached the full bloom. Easwaran, who is often dubbed as an obdurate batter, looked in complete control, and at times even outpaced Sooryavanshi.

They milked 100 runs for the opening wicket in just 14.overs and East seldom let that momentum slip. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi would curse himself for playing a rather reckless pull off Milind for substitute Tanay Thayagarajan to offer a simple catch in the deep. It, perhaps, was the first time South bowlers tested the young left-hander with a short-pitched ball and it yielded instant results.

The whole sequence will teach the Bihar youngster to show more patience in the middle, particularly when nearly 10,000 spectators thronged the MA Chidambaram Stadium to watch the latest wonder kid in cricket. Kushagra too played with determination as South withered under a barrage of runs. Nothing more revealed the plight of South than the sight of lead pacer Mohammad Siraj going through three colourless spells.

The India quick's outing on the day read - 5-0-41-0, 5-1-24-0 and 4-0-31-0 for an overall reading of 14-1-96-0. Siraj was clobbered around by Sooryavanshi (6, 4, 4), Easwaran (4, 4), Kushagra (6, 4) as the Hyderabad man struggled to make an impact.

He can partly blame a flat pitch for his ineffectiveness, but there was no real attempt from his side to alter the course of the happenings. Unless, South find a way to pluck East's remaining six wickets on Monday quickly they will be further buried under an avalanche of runs, and will find it tough to come out of it.

Special arrangements made for Mirabai Chanu’s AG26 preparations: Reveals CDM Sahdev Yadav

Recent media reports have highlighted how the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) have made arrangements for the athletes. At SAI Patiala, temporary accommodation arrangements have been made similar to what will be available in Japan, so that the athletes can adjust to the conditions and not face any surprises when they land in Nagoya for the Asian Games.

The Asian Games 2026 are set to start on September 19. India’s Chef de Mission, Sahdev Yadav, who is also the president of the Weightlifting Federation of India, recently revealed in an exclusive chat with RevSportz how the federation and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, have been providing support to the athletes.

“Even I will be staying in such a container, and these makeshift arrangements have helped the athletes to acclimatise,” he said. “But, if still someone needs special arrangements in Japan, IOA can make those arrangements.”

Apart from these, the Weightlifting Federation president revealed how the authorities have been supportive of the athletes’ requirements. He gave the example of Mirabai Chanu’s requirement and how it was met.

“This time in Japan, the weights that’ll be used in weightlifting are made by Osaka Co., which have not been used for several years, and are not readily available in India,” he said. “Mira wanted the Osaka plates so she can practice with those because these plates behave differently than those which are generally used.”

“We have been able to arrange the Osaka plates for Mira’s preparations,” he added.

Speaking of Chanu’s chances in the Asian Games, he said, “She is doing well and even lifted 204 kgs in 48 kgs in the nationals. Here, she’s in the 49kgs category, and will surely break the weightlifting medal deadlock.”

“We are eagerly waiting for that moment,” he concluded.

The last time India won a weightlifting medal at the Asian Games was in Bangkok in 1998. Karnam Malleswari won the silver in the women’s 63kg category.

Samarawickrama guides Sri Lanka to women’s Asia Cup semis

Dubai [UAE], September 7 (ANI): Harshitha Samarawickrama’s patient knock helped Sri Lanka overcome a valiant effort from Bangladesh bowlers and secure her side a spot in the women’s Asia Cup semifinals with a four-wicket win on Sunday.

After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh were off to a positive start in Dubai, with Juairiya Ferdous and Dilara Akter going at six runs an over till the five-over mark before the former fell to Sugandika Kumari for 14.

Chamudi Praboda lifted Sri Lanka further by accounting for Dilara (26 in 26 balls, with four boundaries) in the seventh over. The middle overs took a turn for the better for the island nation as Kavisha Dilhari trapped Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana Joty (4) leg before wicket, as per ICC.

Sobhana Mostary was a sight of resistance amidst Sri Lankan dominance and added 34 runs (in 41 balls, with four boundaries) to get Bangladesh closer to the 100 run mark, before she too was stumped off Praboda.

Praboda added another scalp to her returns in the form of Shorna Akter and finished with sharp figures of 3/21.

Bangladesh crossed the three-figure mark but their scoring rate failed to pick up as Sri Lanka’s spinners delivered with discipline in the death overs, with 12 runs coming off between overs 17-19, before Fahima Khatun unleashed some attacking strokes in the final over. Bangladesh could score only 114/8 in 20 overs.

Chasing 115 runs to win, Sri Lanka were stunned early in the chase, as Bangladesh speedster Marufa Akter got rid of Chamari Athapaththu for merely one. Marufa doubled Sri Lanka’s woes with another wicket in her following over, getting rid of Imesha Dulani (12).

As Sultana Khatun cleaned up Sanjana Kavindi (9), Sri Lanka needed a rescue act as the required rate crept beyond six in the middle overs. But pressure mounted as Vishmi Gunaratne fell to Ritu Moni and Kavisha Dilhari was run out. SL was 82/6 in 16.2 overs.

Samarawickrama showed resilience and fought on for Sri Lanka, finding support from Nilakshika Silva. The duo saw through the tough phase of the middle overs and kept Sri Lanka in sight of the target.

The game hung in balance, as Sri Lanka needed 33 off the last four overs, when Marufa returned to clean up Nilakshika (18) for her third scalp and tilt the scales in favour of Bangladesh yet again.

However, Harshitha (48* in 37 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes) persevered through Marufa’s final over, and took on Ritu Moni, unleashing a four and a six to bring Sri Lanka right into the contest in the 18th over. Plundering 11 off the 19th over, with a six off the final ball, Harshitha made the task easier for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka eventually took the win, with four wickets and four balls in hand.

Sri Lanka are now through to the semi-final stage of the Asia Cup, having won all their contests in the group stage.

On the other hand, all is not lost for Bangladesh, who will go up against the United Arab Emirates next. A win in that encounter can help the side advance to the knock-out stage. (ANI)
