Sometimes a photo frame is enough to gauge the mood on the field of play. As Ishan Kishan neared a memorable double ton in the Duleep Trophy final in Chennai, he took a short break. Kishan was seen leaning on the back of Tilak Varma, the South Zone captain. At that moment, one could gauge that not just South Zone’s players, but Kishan, too, was feeling the effects of the sapping heat.
Just that even the cauldron of Chepauk couldn’t break the concentration prowess of the Jharkhand cricketer. He soon reached his double ton with a boundary that rocketed through the covers. The subsequent celebration, which included Kishan removing the helmet and hugging Anukul Roy, his batting partner, was of a man contented with his sterling effort.
The essence of his marathon effort was unflappable temperament. On occasions, Mohammed Siraj, CV Milind, Md Nidheesh and Co. tried to bounce him with four fielders, square and behind square on the on-side. But Kishan brought out the pull when he could keep the ball down. Siraj and Tilak also engaged in a few banters with Kishan, but nothing seemed to bother the left-hand batter.
To illustrate the point further, just one over before the lunch break, Siraj had bowled a slower one. Even that slower one was met with a dead-bat defence. After reaching his double-century, Kishan pressed the accelerator pedal and completed his 250 in just 300 balls. At that point of time, it even seemed as if Kishan would surpass Raman Lamba’s iconic 320 against West Zone; the highest individual score in the Duleep Trophy history. Unfortunately, he soon retired hurt with cramps and fatigue.
Granted that the pitch has offered little for the spinners and pacers on Day 1 and Day 2. South Zone’s fields might have been defensive and their bowlers below par. But that shouldn’t take anything away from Kishan’s zen- masterly innings in white flannels.
He is also providing enough material for the national selectors to pen down on his Test-match credentials.
