Mass brawl erupts as Spain beat Argentina to win 2026 FIFA World Cup

A massive physical fight broke out between the players and coaching staff of Spain and Argentina after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, 19 July 2026.

The highly anticipated final took place at the New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium) in East Rutherford, New Jersey, but the celebrations were overshadowed by chaotic scenes after the final whistle.

Tempers explode after the final whistle

The confrontation escalated into a mass brawl involving players, substitutes and coaching staff from both teams.

Multiple punches were thrown, players aggressively shoved one another and several incidents of throat-grabbing were witnessed as members from both benches rushed into the melee.

Paredes at the centre of the confrontation

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was at the centre of the altercation.

He raced into the Spanish celebrations and grabbed Spain defender Eric García by the throat before slamming him to the ground.

Paredes then turned his attention to teenage midfielder Gavi, violently tackling and wrestling him to the grass as the confrontation intensified.

Molina throws punch

Argentina defender Nahuel Molina was also involved in the incident.

He was seen launching a physical punch to the stomach of a Spanish opponent who was running past him to celebrate.

Spain secure the World Cup

The dramatic scenes followed Spain’s 1-0 victory in extra time.

Spain controlled the tempo throughout regulation time, limiting Argentina to zero shots in the first 90 minutes. However, legendary saves from Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez forced the match into extra time.

Argentina had earlier been reduced to 10 men after midfielder Enzo Fernández received a second yellow card in second-half stoppage time (90+3′) for a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsí.

The decisive moment came in the 106th minute when substitute Ferran Torres pounced on a bouncing ball inside the penalty area and struck it under the crossbar to seal the victory.

Scaloni restores order

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni sprinted into the middle of the brawl and aggressively pulled his own players away as he worked alongside refereeing officials to restore order.

Once the confrontation had been brought under control, referee Slavko Vinčić issued a straight red card to Leandro Paredes.

Because the dismissal came before the medal ceremony, Paredes was banned from taking part in the podium presentations.

Spain make history

The victory saw Spain become the first nation in football history to simultaneously hold both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup titles.

The win also extended Spain’s unbeaten streak to 38 matches, setting a new record for any European men’s national team.

Spain conceded only a single goal throughout their eight-game tournament run.

The final also marked the last FIFA World Cup appearance for 39-year-old Lionel Messi, who finished the tournament with eight goals but fell just short of securing a consecutive global title.

Trophy lift follows dramatic finale

Before the trophy presentation, Spain’s Lamine Yamal collected the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player.

King Felipe VI of Spain and FIFA President Gianni Infantino then handed the FIFA World Cup trophy to Spanish captain Álvaro Morata.

Morata lifted the trophy into the New Jersey night sky as red and gold confetti and fireworks celebrated Spain’s victory after one of the most dramatic endings to a FIFA World Cup final.
