'This is our culture': Japan fans clean up World Cup stadium
Arlington, United States: Japan fans left the stands spotless after their World Cup opener against the Netherlands in Texas on Sunday, saying it was "Japanese culture" to tidy up after themselves.
Spectators stayed behind after the 2-2 draw to make sure they left the stadium as they found it, meticulously picking up litter and stuffing it into blue plastic bags. tr-sport.click
It is a habit first learned at primary school and Japan fan Eita Tanaka told AFP that "we have to think about everyone".
"Japanese people think that when we use a certain place, we were told that you have to make that place look tidier when you leave than it was when you arrived," said the 20-year-old, clasping a bottle and a couple of cups, and wearing Japan's blue shirt.

"For example, at school in our classrooms we tidy it up after ourselves without our teacher telling us."
Japan are appearing at their eighth straight World Cup and their fans' cleanliness has become their international calling card.
NFL quarterback Jameis Winston could even be seen joining in the clean-up after Sunday's game, wearing a blue Japan shirt with his name on the back.
Japan fan Futo Hagiwara said he was proud that the behaviour of his countrymen had been recognised in a positive light.
"This is our culture, that means everywhere we go we need to clean it after ourselves, it's our spiritual way, our attitude," he said.

Sociologist and philosopher Masachi Ohsawa believes a mix of social responsibility and peer pressure is behind the fans' behaviour.
"While Japanese people tend not to take much interest in justice on a large scale -- issues like global inequality, conflict or climate change -- they are extremely sensitive to moral considerations on a smaller scale," he said.
"When it comes to people who they share the same space with or have direct personal contact with, they feel a strong desire not to cause them any trouble or make them feel uncomfortable."
School of life
Cleaning chores are a part of Japanese education from an early age, and children can be seen scrubbing floors and tables at schools every day.
Public waste bins are scarce in the country, and people are expected to take their rubbish home with them.
Getting rid of household waste can be a labyrinthine task that involves separating rubbish into different categories.

Scott North, emeritus professor of sociology at the University of Osaka, said he and his neighbours get together twice a year to pull out weeds and rake up cuttings.
He said such groups are organised into leaders and followers, and operate in a similar way to Japanese football supporters.
"Since everyone comes together, there's an expectation that they'll act as a group," said North, an American who has lived in Japan for about 40 years.
"And when the leaders break out the bags and say here you go, nobody is going to say no."
Sociologist Ohsawa said such behaviour could be explained by what Japanese people refer to as "reading the air".
"In Japan, even if one person starts picking up litter, those around them feel they simply cannot help but join in," he said.
"That's because if they don't, the people they are with will think they are a bad person."

He said peer pressure was a powerful social force.
"In this case, the primary motivation isn't so much a desire to keep the stadium clean or to avoid causing trouble for the people who have to clean the stadium afterwards," he said.
"It's more a desire not to be seen as a nuisance in one's own group."
Whatever the reasons, Japan's fans will keep tidying up for as long as they stay in the tournament.
Their next game is against Tunisia in Mexico on Saturday, and fan Hagiwara is happy to keep leading by example.
"We usually don't tell children they should do it," he said.
"We just show our actions and behaviour, and other people follow."
Serena Williams to play doubles with sister Venus at Wimbledon
London: Serena Williams will play at Wimbledon for the first time since 2022 after the American legend was given a wildcard to play the doubles event with her sister Venus on Tuesday.
Williams made a sensational return to tennis last week when she won her first-round doubles match at Queen's Club with partner Victoria Mboko.
The 44-year-old had not played professional tennis for four years after saying she was "evolving away" from the sport following the 2022 US Open.
But the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion was keen to play in front of her two young daughters and made the shock announcement of her return just prior to the Wimbledon warm-up event at Queen's.
Williams was unable to play more than one match at Queen's after Mboko pulled out with an injury, but she is due to continue her remarkable comeback in the Berlin Open doubles alongside Karolina Muchova this week.
The Williams sisters are six-time doubles champions at Wimbledon, winning their last title on their most recent appearance together a decade ago.
Following speculation that Serena would be tempted to play in the singles at Wimbledon, which starts on June 29, the American was absent from the list of wildcard entries into that part of the tournament.
After so long away, she had no ranking to secure automatic entry into tournaments, leaving her to rely on wildcards.
There is still one singles wildcard place for Wimbledon to be announced.

وكان العنابي قد نجح في العودة أمام المنتخب السويسري وفرض التعادل بعد مباراة أظهر خلالها اللاعبون شخصية قوية وروحاً قتالية حتى اللحظات الأخيرة، بينما تمكن المنتخب الكندي من العودة أيضاً أمام البوسنة والهرسك بعد التأخر ليخرج بالتعادل، وهو ما يؤكد أن مواجهة الخميس ستكون صراعاً تكتيكياً وفنياً من الطراز العالي بين منتخبين يبحثان عن أول انتصار في البطولة.
ويبدو واضحاً أن المدرب الإسباني لوبيتيغي يدرك تماماً صعوبة المهمة، خاصة أن المنتخب الكندي سيلعب مدعوماً بعاملي الأرض والجمهور، وهو ما سيمنحه أفضلية معنوية كبيرة منذ الدقيقة الأولى، الأمر الذي يتطلب من لاعبي العنابي دخول المباراة بتركيز عالٍ وشخصية قوية وعدم السماح لأصحاب الأرض بفرض إيقاعهم مبكراً.
توازن مطلوب من لوبيتيغي

ويبدو أن الأداء الجيد الذي قدمه لاعبو العنابي في المباراة الأولى، خاصة بعد العودة القوية وتحقيق التعادل أمام المنتخب السويسري، منح الجهاز الفني حالة من القناعة بالانسجام الكبير بين عناصر التشكيلة الأساسية، وهو ما قد يدفع لوبيتيغي إلى الحفاظ على نفس الأسماء مع إمكانية إجراء تعديلات بسيطة وفقاً لطبيعة المواجهة.
ويرى الجهاز الفني أن الاستقرار الفني في مثل هذه المباريات المهمة يمنح اللاعبين مزيداً من الثقة والتركيز، خصوصاً أن مواجهة كندا تحتاج إلى انسجام تكتيكي كبير أمام منتخب يعتمد على السرعة والقوة البدنية ويلعب مدعوماً بعاملي الأرض والجمهور.

كريبو في حراسة المرمى، وأمامه جونستون وفوجرول وكورنيليوس ولاريا، وفي الوسط بوكانان وكونيه وإيوستا كويو وميلر، بينما يقود الهجوم جوناثان وأولواسي.
وتعكس هذه التشكيلة رغبة المنتخب الكندي في اللعب بأسلوب هجومي والضغط المبكر مستفيداً من الحضور الجماهيري الكبير المتوقع في المدرجات.
FIFA Executive Summit 2026 shapes future of football
Miami: The US city of Miami hosted the 2026 edition of the FIFA Executive Football Summit, bringing together representatives of FIFA's member associations to exchange ideas, strengthen cooperation, and help shape the future of the game ahead of the expanded global investment cycle.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, participants discussed ways to enhance FIFA's development programs and support national associations in advancing football through best practices in key development areas.
FIFA Secretary General Matthias Grafstrom opened the session, highlighting the summit's dual role as both a strategic platform for youth development and a forum for informal exchange of ideas.
A key focus of the summit was the FIFA Forward program, FIFA's main development initiative, which has seen significant expansion over the past decade.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino noted that funding for member associations has increased dramatically, rising from USD 1 million over four years a decade ago to about USD 8 million under FIFA Forward 3.0, with further increases of around 20 percent approved to support investment in competitions, infrastructure, and football projects.
He also highlighted that the 2026 World Cup will feature 48 teams for the first time, saying the expanded format helps drive greater investment and global development of the sport.
