Doha: Qatar will host Saudi Arabia on Monday at Al Gharafa Arena in the rescheduled second-window fixture of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 Asian Qualifiers, with both sides aiming to strengthen their positions in a tightly contested Group D. chickenroad.qpon

The matchup carries significant importance for both teams, not only because of the longstanding regional rivalry but also due to the remarkably close standings in a group that also features Lebanon and India.

Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon are all level on five points after recording two wins and one defeat each, making Group D one of the most competitive and evenly balanced groups in the Asian qualifying campaign.

Although Qatar have already secured a place in the second round as hosts of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, head coach Hakan Demir and his coaching staff view the game as a valuable opportunity to continue improving the team's performances, strengthen on-court chemistry, and build momentum ahead of the third qualification window.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, arrive in Doha knowing that victory would move them to the brink of securing a second-round berth. The Saudis would officially qualify if they defeat Qatar and Lebanon also overcome India, adding further significance to Monday's encounter.

Qatar enter the contest following an intensive preparation camp in Antalya, Turkiye, where the coaching staff focused on enhancing the squad's physical condition, refining tactical aspects, and improving overall match readiness. The hosts concluded their preparations with two friendly matches against Tunisia.

Team Qatar opened their qualifying campaign with a narrow 75-74 home defeat to Lebanon before avenging that loss with an impressive 86-83 away victory. They then continued their strong run by defeating India 99-73.

Following Monday's clash with Saudi Arabia, Qatar will travel to Ahmedabad to face India on July 2 in the third qualification window before visiting Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on July 5.

أكد سعادة السيد سعد بن محمد الرميحي، مدير تلفزيون قطر سابقاً، أن الكلمات مهما بلغت من البلاغة، والعبارات مهما ازدانت بالفصاحة، فإنها تعجز عن الإحاطة بمآثر صاحب السمو الأمير الوالد الشيخ حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني، رحمه الله، لأنه قائدٌ لم يصنع الإنجازات فحسب، بل صنع مرحلةً تاريخيةً كاملة غيّرت وجه دولة قطر، ورسخت مكانتها بين الأمم.
وقال الرميحي إنه تشرف بالعمل سنوات طويلة تحت قيادة الأمير الوالد في مواقع ومسؤوليات مختلفة، سواء في المجال الإعلامي أو الرياضي، كما حظي بشرف العمل سكرتيراً لسموه لشؤون المتابعة بالديوان الأميري، الأمر الذي أتاح له أن يلمس عن قرب صفات القائد الإنسان، وصاحب الرؤية الثاقبة، الذي كان يؤمن بأن خدمة الوطن مسؤولية وأمانة قبل أن تكون منصباً.

«قائد يؤمن بالإنسان «
وأوضح الرميحي أن الأمير الوالد كان يرى أن الإنسان هو الثروة الحقيقية للوطن، ولذلك جعل الاستثمار في الإنسان أساس كل مشروع تنموي، فشهدت قطر نهضة غير مسبوقة في التعليم والصحة والبنية التحتية والاقتصاد والإعلام والثقافة والرياضة، حتى أصبحت نموذجاً عالمياً في التنمية الشاملة.
وأضاف أن سموه لم يكن ينظر إلى المستقبل بعين الحاضر فقط، بل كان يخطط لعقود قادمة، وهو ما يفسر استمرار ثمار تلك الرؤية حتى اليوم، حيث ما تزال المؤسسات التي أسسها والمشروعات التي أطلقها تؤدي دورها بكفاءة، وتواصل تحقيق أهدافها في خدمة الوطن والمواطن.
«الإعلام شريك في النهضة»
وأشار الرميحي إلى أن الأمير الوالد منح الإعلام اهتماماً كبيراً، إيماناً منه بدوره في بناء الوعي الوطني ونقل الصورة الحقيقية لدولة قطر إلى العالم، فشهد القطاع الإعلامي تطوراً كبيراً، وأصبحت قطر تمتلك حضوراً إعلامياً مؤثراً على المستويين الإقليمي والدولي.
وأكد أن الأمير الوالد كان قريباً من الإعلاميين، يستمع إلى آرائهم، ويشجع المبادرات التي تعزز رسالة الإعلام المسؤول، وكان يؤمن بأن الكلمة الصادقة شريك أساسي في بناء الدولة الحديثة.

«الرياضة مشروع وطني متكامل»
وأضاف الرميحي أن الأمير الوالد لم ينظر إلى الرياضة باعتبارها منافسات وميداليات فقط، وإنما جعلها مشروعاً وطنياً متكاملاً يرسخ قيم الانتماء، ويعزز الحضور الدولي للدولة، ولذلك شهدت قطر في عهده طفرة رياضية غير مسبوقة، استضافت خلالها أكبر البطولات القارية والعالمية، وأصبحت مركزاً رياضياً يحظى بثقة العالم.

وأوضح أن الإنجازات الرياضية التي تعيشها قطر اليوم ليست وليدة اللحظة، وإنما هي امتداد لرؤية استراتيجية بعيدة المدى وضع أسسها الأمير الوالد، وآمن بها حتى أصبحت واقعاً يفتخر به الجميع.

«إرث خالد يتواصل عطاؤه»
واختتم الرميحي تصريحه قائلاً إن أعظم ما تركه الأمير الوالد ليس المباني أو المشروعات، وإنما الإرث الوطني الذي أصبح جزءاً من هوية قطر الحديثة، مؤكداً أن مسيرة البناء والتنمية تتواصل بقيادة حضرة صاحب السمو الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني أمير البلاد المفدى، حفظه الله، الذي واصل النهج ذاته، محافظاً على المكتسبات، ومضيفاً إليها إنجازات جديدة عززت مكانة الدولة على مختلف المستويات، ويشهد لسموه، حفظه الله، جهوده الواسعة والمخلصة في خدمة الوطن وحرصه على رفاهية شعبه، فاصبحت قطر، بفضلٍ من الله، ثم بفضل سياسته الحكيمة تتربع على الصدارة عالمياً في مستويات عده كالخدمات الصحية والاجتماعية والتعليمية وغيرها، ناهيك عن كون قطر أكبر دول العالم في مستوى دخل الفرد.
لذا يعتبر صاحب السمو الشيخ تميم بن حمد آل ثاني أحد أبرز الشخصيات العالمية التي دعمت وحافظت وحققت لبلاده في سنوات قليلة مالم تحققه دول في مراحل مختلفه، كما يؤكد على النظرة الثاقبة لسمو الأمير الوالد رحمه الله، كان بعيد النظر عندما سلم امانة الحكم لولي عهده ثقةً في امكانياته الإدارية وسعة افقه ورحابة صدره وحزمه في معالجة القضايا التي تمس امن الوطن او المواطن.
وأضاف أن التاريخ سيظل يذكر الأمير الوالد باعتباره قائداً استثنائياً، ورجل دولة نذر حياته لرفعة وطنه، وأن دعوات أبناء قطر ومحبة الشعوب ستبقى خير شاهد على مكانته الكبيرة، سائلاً المولى عز وجل أن يتغمده بواسع رحمته، وأن يجزيه عن وطنه وشعبه خير الجزاء، وأن يحفظ سمو الأمير الشيخ تميم بن حمد ويمد في عمره ويوفقه لما يحبه ويرضاه.

Tokyo: Indian badminton star Pusarla Venkata Sindhu ended a title drought of almost two years at the Japan Open on Sunday and said winning would give her "a lot of confidence".

Sindhu, a world champion in 2019 and Olympic silver medallist in 2016, beat Japan's Akane Yamaguchi 21-17, 21-17 in Tokyo to win the competition for the first time.

It was her first title since she won the Syed Modi India International in Lucknow in 2024.

Sindhu has set her sights on a medal on home soil when New Delhi hosts the world championships next month, and she said her win in Japan would boost her chances.

"This one was very important because playing in finals is one thing, but winning and getting that gold is a different thing altogether," the 31-year-old said.

"I'm happy that I'm on the positive side. This gives me a lot of confidence."

Sindhu was playing in her first final since winning in Lucknow, after losing in the semi-finals twice on badminton's world tour this year.

She is currently ranked number 10 in the world.

Sindhu jumped out to an early lead against world number three Yamaguchi and held on to take the first game.

She clinched the title when Yamaguchi hit a shot that was called in, only for Sindhu to successfully overturn it with a challenge.

"I had tears in my eyes because it was really important to me," Sindhu said.

"I am working hard and focusing hard on myself.

"I kept believing that I could do it, even though a lot of people were wondering what was happening."

Popov wins men's title

France's Christo Popov captured the men's singles title, beating Japan's Koki Watanabe 21-11, 21-19 in the final.

It was Popov's third title of the year, following wins at the European Championships and German Open.

"It's a great performance, it's one of the biggest things I've done in my life," said world number five Popov, who was the fifth seed in Tokyo.

"I'm actually very happy to do it in Japan. I've always liked the country, the culture and respect."

Popov said his performances in Tokyo had convinced him that he can win a medal at the world championships.

"I know it's very difficult, way harder than here," the 24-year-old said.

"I think the pressure is much higher as well and the players will be ready 100 percent there.

"I want a medal, that's my goal."

China's Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping won the mixed doubles title, beating Hong Kong's Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet 21-14, 14-21, 21-15.

South Korea's Kim Hye-Jeong and Kong Hee-yong won the women's doubles title after an epic battle against China's Jia Yifan and Zhang Shuxian, eventually triumphing 14-21, 21-15, 30-29.

Indonesia's Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri beat South Korean top seeds Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae 21-19, 21-17 in the men's doubles final.
